The Largest Employers in Each State: MAP

Largest Employers in Each State MAP

We at Broadview Networks are not only dedicated hosted phone providers, we’re also enthusiasts of all things business.  Whether we’re watching Bill Gates give a TED talk or reading about the oil boom in North Dakota, we love it all.  An article from last year looking at the largest employers in America sparked our interest on the topic and we decided to take a deeper look.  Wal-Mart has been on the top of that list for a couple years with a total workforce of nearly 2.2 million people, but were they the largest employers in each individual state?  Using CareerOneStop, a database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, we researched who the largest employers in each state were.  The results were very surprising with only 2 companies from the Top 10 Largest Employers in America were represented, in IBM and Wal-Mart.  There were some shocking exclusions as well, with no McDonald’s, Yum! Brands, or UPS on the list.  Instead, we saw quite a few major state universities, health systems/hospitals, and military bases.  To make it more visual, we decided to create a map with each state as the company’s logo.  Take a look and let us know what you think, are you shocked about what the largest company in your state is?

What about Walt Disney World in Florida? Who is the largest single site employer in the country with 62,000 employers?

    • Allison

I can see that CareerOneStop calculated each park and segment of Walt Disney World individually.

  • Bobby

the University of California has 10 campuses, a combined student body of 234,464 students, 18,896 faculty members, 189,116 staff members, …just saying.

  • Dakota

This list is a crock. Mobile County School System alone has around 8,000 employees.

  • Dakota

Just found out with about 2 minutes of research that Alabama’s top employer is Redstone Arsenal with 25,000 employees. Way to go Broadview. I will never use your services.

  • Rebel_Angel

Kentucky is wrong. That hospital has 1,200 employees, not 12,000. The population of Ashland is only 25,000. Double check your facts.

  • Tim

This list is very much wrong. The federal government should show up as the number one employer in most states.

Thank you for your interest in the map! Unfortunately, there were clearly problems with the database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor meaning that the map is inaccurate. We strive to create cool and accurate content, not to deceive. We believed that we could trust a singular source of data rather than find 50 different sources, but it seems like that data is outdated or incorrect. We regret the error, sorry for the inconvenience.

Uhhh… Sikorsky is a division of United Technologies Corp. which would mean that UTC is the largest employer in the state of Connecticut.

  • Charlie Offenbacher

“Bartercard” is listed as the largest employer in South Carolina with 55,000 employees. Their whole building looks like it fits 250 people. There are some major data quality issues with this analysis.

  • Tony

No way this is right. In Utah, Intermountain Health Care, University of Utah, and Brigham Young University all have over 20,000 employees. This OTG doesn’t even show up on the top 100.
