Home Office Essentials
There are quite a few compelling reasons to work from home, if your job allows it. It’s certainly convenient not to have to worry too much about how you look before you “punch in” for the day. It’s also economical not to have to fill up your car’s gas tank to commute back and forth between your home and office.
As great as working from home can be, you want to make sure that you’ve got everything you need to remain not just productive, but also happy in your new space. Here are some ideas.
If you work from home, there’s a very good chance that a majority of the work you do is web-based. If that’s the case, then you owe it to yourself to give your Internet service a speed boost. If you haven’t looked into fiber-optic Internet yet, now is the time; it’s more affordable than ever, and provides the best speed you’ll find among the home Internet services currently available.
Most of the items on this list are things that you add to your office after the fact, but a window is something you’ll want to take into account while you’re deciding on which room to use for your office, or even when you’re still looking for a new house or apartment. You’re going to be spending quite a few hours out of every day in your home office; you’ll thank yourself for choosing a room with plenty of natural sunlight, and perhaps with a decent view. Fluorescent lighting will take its toll on your eyes after a while.
A Spacious Desk
Many of us tend to have rather cluttered desks, between our computers, printers, and other equipment, not to mention paperwork and a hundred other things that we want close at hand throughout the day. While you generally don’t want to treat your desk like a shelf, you do want one that will let you spread out just a little bit. You don’t want to have to move your keyboard or even the computer itself when you want to get a little bit of paperwork done.
Even though one of the major advantages of working from home is the fact that you don’t need to commute anywhere, it still stands to reason that you won’t always be at your desk. That’s where a cloud phone system could come in handy. You may know it as IP phone or VoIP, but the idea is the same: it’s a great way to make sure you’re never out-of-touch, by turning each of your devices (laptop, smartphone, or tablet) into an extension of the phone system in your home.
A Comfortable Chair
You’ll be amazed at the difference a good chair can make. If you’ve ever struggled with lower-back pain, or your wrists hurt after using a mouse and keyboard for a while, it might be time to trade your current chair in for something a little more comfortable. The armrests should be padded to accommodate long hours at the desk, and the height should be adjustable so that you’re not looking up nor down at your monitor, but straight ahead. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but do remember that you get what you pay for.
