Map of the Largest Companies in Each State by Market Cap in 2016

Map of the Largest Companies in Each State by Market Cap in 2016

When you think about the largest company in each state, total revenue, sales, or maybe even number of employees probably come to mind. Those of us who aren’t Wall Street insiders rarely delve into the finer points of a company’s worth. Just give us the biggest dollar amount you can find, and we offer a collective “wow . . .

Investors often look at other factors when valuing a company, however. One such factor is a company’s market capitalization value.

Because of the success of last year’s map "The Largest Company in Each State by Marketcap 2015", we decided to compile the data again this year.

What’s Market Cap?

Market Cap refers to the total dollar value of a company’s available shares. For example, if a company has 30 million outstanding shares worth $150 apiece, the company’s market cap value would be $4.5 billion.

Outstanding Shares x Cost of Share = Market Cap

Why would investors care about the value of a company’s outstanding shares? First, it helps investors see one company’s value in relation to another. Basically, it’s an easy and scalable way to compare companies.

Secondly, market cap reveals the open-market value of a company. Assets aren’t readily available, but stocks are.

Third, it offers a window into how risky a stock purchase is. A larger market cap value would indicate a better public perception---better perception leads to more value per share and less risk of that value plummeting.
